New SKA mini-site launched to support high-priority status of SKA in Portugal

The SKA was recently ranked as a high-priority in the Portuguese Research Infrastructure Roadmap (RI) with a new RI called Enabling Green E-Science for the SKA (ENGAGE SKA).

With this important milestone, ENGAGE SKA congregates Portuguese universities and industry participating in the SKA Consortia and accelerates the planning towards membership of SKA. From today, the Portuguese SKA mini-site opens a new window on the last developments, events and news, written in Portuguese. This new window will broadcast in Portuguese the international SKA efforts, and the national contributions, to the 250 million Portuguese speakers around the world.

According to Domingos Barbosa from the Institute of Telecommunications in Portugal “ENGAGE SKA is a team platform Enabling Green E-science for the SKA, which will promote an excellent science capacitation and sustainability of Portuguese participation in the SKA, taking radio astronomy as an Innovation Open Living Lab.” ENGAGE SKA aims to bring the Green ICT concepts to radio astronomy, and it is endorsed nationally by FCT as a major radio astronomy plan. It is led by the Institute of Telecommunications, the Universities of Aveiro, Porto and Évora, the Polytechnic Institute of Beja, and counts with several companies, namely, Martifer Solar, Critical Software, Visabeira Global, Active Space, Coriant, PT, among others SMEs.

The SKA mini-sites are part of an initiative launched in 2014 by the SKA Organisation’s Communications Office to increase awareness of the SKA in non English-speaking countries and give relevant SKA-related information to local audiences in their language.

From today, the Portuguese SKA mini-site is accessible through its flag in the top banner of the SKA website.
